The 2014 Annual General Meeting for the Rockwood Homeowners’ Association (RHA) will be held on Thursday, May 8, 2014, at 7:00PM in the Knights of Columbus Hall located at 1870  Burnhamthorpe Rd. East, beside the front entrance to Sts. Martha and Mary Church. There is lots of parking space at the rear of the church.

The AGM is a great opportunity for residents to come out to hear and to be heard about issues that affect our neighbourhood. We have a full complement of speakers who will address issues, from new developments in the area to crime and prevention. Bring your questions.

This year the RHA will introduce a proposal to fund a project to erect Rockwood Village signage in appropriate locations in the neighbourhood.

Speakers include Ward 3 Councillor, Chris Fonseca; Scott Anderson, City of Mississauga (BRT); Cliff Coppolino - TRCA (Toronto and Region Conservation Authority); and Constable Laura Wells Community Response Unit - Division 12.

Of course, there is always the possibility that, as in years past, we may even have a visit from the Mayor. For a little comic relief, a local theatre group, Class Productions, will present a short skit.

See you on Thursday, May 8th!

This May, a unique cycling event called the “Tour de TIPS” is being held to raise money for, and awareness about, the Crime Stoppers program. Starting in the town of Newmarket, riders will cycle 225 scenic kilometres over 2 days to the finish line at Hernder Estates Winery in Niagara Region.

In Peel, we have a strong history of supporting Crime Stoppers, a very successful program, which is funded exclusively through private and corporate contributions.

A lot of police officers pledged their participation in the 2010 Tour de TIPS, and they are looking for other riders to join them in this worthwhile cause. If you like to ride, and want to help keep Crime Stoppers successful, then please register yourself as a rider and come out for this unique two-day ride.

To register, or if you have any questions, please contact A/Sgt. Iris Johnston at 905.453.2121 ext 4876, iris.johnston@peelpolice.ca or Colleen Hawes at ext 4877, colleen.hawes@peelpolice.ca

On February 27th, about 50 residents braved the elements to attend a Crime Prevention seminar hosted by Councilor Fonseca. The evening featured presentations by Peel Police including our own liaison officer Constable Sandro Strangio.

The focus of the meeting centered around tips for keeping your family and our neighborhood safe through awareness. Residents were advised that the key to a safe neighbourhood was watching out for the unordinary and advising the police of any and all
unusual activity on your street. While major crimes will get higher priority, the police confirmed that they do check into all requests from concerned citizens. This means that just because an unknown car has been parked on your street for two days, the police may not respond within the hour, but
they will come and check it out.

One thing that was brought to the attention of the audience was the role that neighbors can play in
helping police to maintain a safe neighborhood. An interesting question was posed. If you saw
someone breaking in to the house behind you – could you inform the police of that address?

Here is the #1 TIP from Safe City Mississauga. KNOW YOUR NEIGHBOURS! If you answer NO to any of these questions, it is time to get to know your neighbours.

1. Do you know the first names of at least 5 different neighbours?
2. Would you be able to give police the address of the house beside or behind you, in the event   that you witnessed a break-in?
3. Would your neighbour know your address, in the event that your home was broken into?

If you see a crime in progress, call 9-1-1. To report suspicious activity, call 905-453-3311. If you have information of a crime call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS. For more information on keeping yourself and our community safe visit www.peelpolice.ca
