A turf is being waged in Beechwood Park. The issue is
for whom the park was intended – dogs or kids.
Neighbours and parents are concerned that dogs, some of which are pretty large, are running free in the park and leaving their “business” behind. They are protesting that dog owner’s are not only breaking the law but that the dogs are preventing the quiet enjoyment that a park is supposed to provide in a neighbourhood.
From the dog owners’ perspective, they feel that they have the right to take Fido to the park too. No problem, if Fido is on a leash and if you scoop up Fido’s droppings.
Not everyone is a dog lover, and some people are downright terrified of them. Big dogs off leash and little children just don’t belong in the same area. Kids and dogs both tend to be unstable in some circumstances and even a docile dog when provoked unwittingly by an innocent child may react in an unfriendly way.
We have many local areas in which you can take your dog off leash. Heck, we even have a designated leash free area in Garnetwood Park. The hydro lines run from Eglinton to Burnhamthorpe and except for the area near the school they are pretty much wide open. North of Audubon and there are large open spaces and what dog wouldn’t love to visit the creek?
The public parks in Mississauga are for everyone, including residents and children who are afraid of animals. Please, dog owners and dog walkers, be considerate of citizens and keep your dog on a leash. Otherwise, you could face the possibility of being hit with a $90 fine.
Let’s all practice good citizenship habits and keep a safe and friendly environment for the peaceful co-existence of children and pets.
